Cereal and Nanners

04/28/11 22 weeks and 1 day ( 5 months and 4 days)
So feeding… we’ve moved from formula to rice cereal and formula. It has been a struggle to get Jack to eat the rice cereal. I started at 4 months (as recommended by our pediatrician) and he just didn’t seem to understand what was going on. He was either to tired to try the new concept of eating off a spoon or he hated the taste because everything that went in came right out.
Then I tried again at about 4 months and 3 weeks, right around when I called Dr. P about him not sleeping, as the cereal still wasn’t working out. Then I tried it again after speaking with Dr. P. This time I tried a few things differently I heated the formula that I was using to make the cereal. I realized everything Jackson has eaten has always been room temperature so the cold must have been a shock for him. When I realized this I felt like slapping myself in the face, “duh, he doesn’t like cold food”. This helped a bit but I also, as per Dr. P, added a tsp of banana baby food to the cereal. I also made the cereal a little thinner so that Jack could swallow it easily.
All these tricks aside I can’t take much credit for Jackson eating his cereal.  The real champion of the great cereal fight was John who put the spoon in Jacks mouth and let him suck the cereal off the spoon. Ever since John tried this Jackson has been eating his cereal like a champ. Hopefully today I will try to move Jackson into eating cereal twice a day, then in another week or so I will try the oatmeal and the barley as Dr. P suggested. She told us to work through the cereal and not worry about fruits or veggies until after his 6 month appointment. I’m hoping that he will take to both well so that we can start veggies after the 6 month appointment. But I guess we will see. I’m learning quickly that Jack does lots of things by the book and other times he does his own thing. Already he’s an independent thinker, just what mommy always wanted.
