I was doing the laundry this morning when I noticed a pair
of Khaki pants on the floor of my closet. They were hard to notice because my
closet floor is covered in shoes, Christmas gifts (yeah me, I’m half way done my
shopping) and a 25 pound Bichon pup who likes to nap there.

They were on the floor because last week I tried
them on for the umpteenth time in vain. Alas they do not fit. And as Jack is
approaching a year old I’m starting to think they will never fit.

While I’ve lost the majority of the baby weight, my body has
changed and I’m a bit, let’s just say wider in some areas than I used to be.
And while it would be wonderful for those pants to fit, I’m starting to think
it’s time to toss the pre-pregnancy clothes that will never be post- pregnancy
clothes.

So after I tossed my favorite skinny jeans and my beloved
khaki pants, I decided that Jack’s closet could use a good cleaning.

I took a
deep breath because I tend to have a problem parting with things.

I am by no
means a hoarder but I have to tendency to hold on way to long. This doesn’t just
apply to clothes. It applies to jobs, relationships, shoes and now of course
Jack’s itty-bitty baby stuff.

I started with the baby towels. I received an insane amount
of these at my shower and sadly Jack is now too big for all of them. As I
packed them away in an empty Pampers box I remembered that there was a time when I
thought these towels were huge. Not anymore.

While I was removing the towels I noticed Jack’s post-christening outfit. A snazzy number from Gymboree with a blue sweater (that my
dad called a Perry Como sweater) and a froggy collared shirt with a fake tie.
This outfit along with a similar one with a doggie on it and matching doggie
pants, I had by passed on the last few rounds I had made through the closet.

I
just couldn’t bring myself to pack them away. They were too cute. But as I
pulled the out of the closet I could tell just how small they were. The Perry
Como sweater now looked like it could be a belly shirt. Away they went.

Then I moved onto blankets. And I just couldn’t do it. All
the super soft receiving blankets seemed to have the makings of a great lovie
some day.

Same goes for all the other blankets I have. The plush green blanket
with the animals on it, screamed “I’m perfect for a stroll on a cold day”.

The blue
blanket with “Let it Snow” on it told me “I’m great for cuddling on a snowy day”.

And of course my favorite blanket with his name on it, well that will probably
sit in the closet forever. The same way my favorite Express Jeans are still
sitting in the back of the drawer. There are somethings that just can’t be
parted with.

Though Jack will never wear his clothes again, I have packed
them away in the basement in the event, that in the future (emphasis on future)
there is another guy in our life who will look great in a Perry Como sweater.

What do you have trouble parting with? Or do you love getting rid of stuff? Still have your skinny jeans?

I have a foot in each world. I love getting rid of things because I am ultra organized, but all my favorite outfits of the kids are kept in a bin in the garage. As for me, I hate to admit but I hang on to a few items that might fit in the future (even though they haven't in 4 years) you never know.

I totally understand where you're coming from. But I finally did the bite the bullet and got rid of everything that was too big on me. I have a tendency to hold onto clothes just in case I gain weight or lose weight. But after having just worked my ass off to lose 35 pounds (with another 20 to go), I knew I had to get rid of those clothes or it would be like giving myself permission to gain the weight back, if that makes sense.
Now, the baby stuff…I'm sooooo horrible about getting rid of things. I've kept their very first stuffed animals (mainly because the animals were bigger than them at birth and I'm all sentimental every time I see them), baby blankets, first Halloween and Christmas outfits, even Easter outfits. I just stuff them inside a large container and hope that maybe someday I can pass them on to their children. Or maybe they'll just think I'm nuts. I even have my wedding gown stuffed away in a closet, with the hopes that my daughter might wear it someday.

Well, hence the fact you got a billion totes from me, you can tell I hold onto things. I took out things that were extra special though. I have a hard time parting with blankets. Also, Dolly and puppy will never go. Either will blue puppy and pink puppy which the kids got at the hospital when they were born. I am a hoarder of my childrens things. I feel bad when I make them go thru things because I feel like I am making them part with pieces of their childhood. Hence I had 5 tubs of fisher price little people in the basement… I can't help it.. they are my loves and I can't let them go… 🙂

I have a hard time parting with certain things as well but that is one reason I finally bought a cedar chest, so I can store the kids' keepsakes that I know I want to pass on to them.
I like the idea to take a picture of some things that you don't necessarily want to keep but still want to have reminders of, however I have yet to do it myself. 😉
