Traveling with a Toddler
Later this winter we are traveling to Aruba with Jack. We booked the trip when Jack was 6 months old and I remember thinking that Jack would be 15 months when we left for the trip.
15 months it seemed so much older than 6 months and it is. But it’s not as old as I thought.
In my mind 15 months was going to be a piece of cake, though in retrospect traveling with a 6 month old would have been easier. A 6 month old would be confined to an infant car seat, where a 15 month old traveling on my lap is confined by nothing but me.
A 15 month old who wants to walk and crawl and explore everything. How will I keep him seated and content for 4 hours? I imagine a lot of sesame street will be involved.
John is much more worried about the flight than I am. He keeps saying how will we fly with him? And I nicely say, “Do you want to go to Aruba? Because the only way we are going is with Jack and the only way to get there is to fly.”
It’s only 4 hours, what’s the worse that can happen? And once it’s over we are in Aruba for 10 glorious days. 4 hours of torment seems like a small price to pay.
Though I would like to make the 4 hour flight as painless as possible, for us and for the passengers who are lucky enough to be seated near us.
Any advice for traveling with a toddler? Were / Are you nervous about traveling with your kids?

One word – Suckers! You know through my blog I am a health nut, but up in the air with no way out, you gotta do what you gotta do.
I would also buy a bunch of toys from the dollar store or the goodwill and wrap them and let him unwrap one every 20 minutes or so.
Your vacation sounds like a dream, how fun!

I didn't even think of suckers, great idea and that should help with the ear popping too. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yah I have to agree traveling with a 15 month old is tough. I traveled alone with my 13 month old, it was only a 2 hour flight, but it was challenging.
I say bring lots of snacks and books to read. Be prepared to walk the aisle. Hopefully he will sleep for part of the flight.
I will have my fingers, toes and eyes crossed that he doesn't poop! That is actually the worst.
Your vacation sounds heavenly! Enjoy!!!!

Poop is my biggest fear! Thanks for the tips. I feel like I need all the help I can get.
