The end of August is always a bit of a mixed bag on the one hand I’m ready for the start of school and to get back to a routine but on the other I’m not ready for summer to be over. August has been a good, full month so far and I’m not quite ready to let go yet.

I worked and then got one of my favorite kinds of text messages, drink and apps at our neighbors. It was great cause the whole framily came out in support of one of our friends who had lost his Dad recently. We got together and the kids played and we toasted and ate and laughed. It felt good and right.

It was National Rum Day! I started the day at Truckerton with my friend Marci. We got to hang out and chat and eat, and it was a gorgeous day to be out without kids. When I got home our neighbors came over and I made an impromptu feast for us all. You would have thought after a day of eating I would have been done but I cooked up a great meal, that I was really proud of. And of course we enjoyed some rum.

It wasn’t a pool day and we couldn’t quite figure out what to do with ourselves. We ended up at the Atlantic City Aquarium, which is small but the kids enjoyed it. Then we did lunch at one of my favorite places, The Back Bay Ale House in Atlantic City. They have great food, a nice kids menu and drinks in mason jars. I stuffed myself with Corona battered fish and then had ice cream for dinner, it was a healthy weekend.

Today was Jack’s last day of swimming lessons for the summer, he will likely start back up in early September. I was really proud of how well he swam today, it’s great to see how much he learned. We had a lazy day at home since the weekend was pretty busy. I hated to let him veg on the couch today but he seemed to need it and I’m trying to remember my summer rules that if he’s happy let him be. We did go in our pool for a bit. I made this delicious ratatouille over tortellini for dinner. It might be blog worthy.

We got off to a slow start, I think Jack was still dragging from the weekend. But once we got out we had a great day, probably one of my favorite days of the summer. We went to a craft store that has kids crafts and after some hesitation Jack painted a sea shell. He loved the experience and can’t wait to go back again. Then we grabbed a snack and headed to the beach for a bit. I let Jack take some pictures with my old point and shoot and he had a great time and it was fun seeing the world through his eyes. It was just the two of us but we had a blast.

I worked and it was pretty uneventful.

John took Jack to his last day of gym class which freed me up to go to the farmers market on my own. After that I had a few minutes to relax by the pool before the boys came home. That night I walked the bridge with my friend and it was wonderful I love feeling like you are so far away from everything.
