I don’t know about you but this winter has hit me really hard. Gray is my favorite color but the weather has been entirely too gray lately. In Winter my only fashion motivation is to be comfortable, but I still want to be stylish. My winter wardrobe has been lacking for years. I don’t like sweaters. I hate long sleeve T-shirts. But this year I finally feel like I’ve come up with a winter look that works for me.
9 Ways to be Comfortable and Stylish this Winter.
Leggings
Call them leggings, call them yoga pants, or as my Mom called them in the 80’s stretch pants. Whatever you call them they are my essential winter pants. They are perfect for days when the idea of wearing anything with zippers or buttons is just not happening. Black leggings go with everything and are the perfect base for your winter wardrobe.
Good Boots
I’m not talking about snow boots, I’m talking about a great pair of stylish boots. Boots are easily my favorite part of winter. I have a few pairs of flats which are perfect for everyday and a great pair of grey boots with a nice heel that are great for work. I regularly pair my grey boots with black tights and a tunic for a comfortable but stylish work appropriate outfit.
Billowy top + Leggings + great boots + scarf |
Billowy top
I crave comfort foods in the winter which sometimes leads to a little extra weight. A billowy top hides all that while still keeping you stylish. I used to just throw on a sweatshirt but a billowy top is much more stylish and flattering.
Street Legal Slippers
My friend Kristen introduced me to this term for shoes like Uggs , that are basically socially acceptable slippers. Because no one wants to be cold when running the kids to school in the morning or waiting at the bus stop these shoes are perfect for days when you seem to be rushing in and out of the house. And they pair really well with leggings.
Black Everything
Black is universally flattering, it’s slimming, it matches everything and never goes out of style. Also it requires zero thought to wear black. On days when I have to go to the office and I’m not feeling actual clothes, I pair some black leggings with a black top and call it a day.
So now you have on your black leggings and you black billowy top but how do you keep the outfit from being a throw back to your goth phase in high school? With a statement necklace. A statement necklace is a simple way to add some color and style with minimal effort. It also dresses up the simplest of tops, like this one from Old Navy.
You would never guess that’s a $7 tee. |
A Great Scarf
Scarves used to just be for keeping warm in the winter while playing in the snow with your kids. Now they are a wardrobe essential. Scarves not only keep you warm but they instantly dress up a bland outfit. I love pairing scarves with t-shirts, plain sweaters and cardigans. Scarves give the perfect combo of style, comfort and warmth. Currently my favorite scarf is this one, from Stitch Fix.
Fun Workout Wear
Some days I just don’t want to put an outfit together. Some days I just want to throw on something comfortable and functional that goes together without much thought. Which is why I love Fabletics. Their workout gear in comfortable, well made and always stylish. I regularly get compliments on my camo pants and matching top, which I recently wore to a Zumba themed birthday party. The outfit was perfect for the class and the after class drinks the bar.
Mascara
I know a lot of Moms don’t have time for make-up but hear me out on this one. You’re stressed out, you’re running on little sleep and you’re exhausted I totally get it but a coat of mascara will work wonders. When I was in the thick of new motherhood with a colicky infant mascara was a life saver. I would throw some on, even if I had time for no other make-up or a shower and instantly I looked a little more awake, alert and alive. Trust me on this one, it’s a total game changer and eye opener.
