I was provided with a product to facilitate this post, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
My son and his best friends come running out into the yard, no longer two little boys and a girl; but a space ranger, a transformer and a pirate. This is the way it often is when my son has friends over to play. Inevitably one of the boys will throw on his space ranger wings or his pirate costume. Last year for his birthday my son requested that the kids at his party dress in their Halloween Costumes. He loves any opportunity to play dress up.
And yet I sort of cringe when I say the word dress-up, because I’m sure like most of you those words conjure up thoughts of tiara’s, princess dresses and all things frilly. I don’t have anything against that kind of stuff, but for my son dress-up is not about frills, it is more about thrills. It’s about being Batman and saving Gotham City from Mr. Freeze and Catwoman. It’s about being a pirate and searching to find buried treasure. It’s about putting on a cowboy hat and chasing down the bad guys. Dress up and this kind of imaginative play is a huge part of my son’s life and yet unless it’s Halloween boys costumes are not nearly as easy to find as girls are.
Which is why I don’t mind spending money on a Halloween costume. We usually pick his costume out in August and put it away till all of the annual trunk or treats and Halloween parties. After Halloween the costume is moved to his playroom where I know it will get lots of playtime from him and his friends. When purchasing his Halloween costume I don’t think of it as a something that he will only wear once or twice but as an addition to his costumes that inspire imaginative play.
Costume Super Center has costumes available for all occasions. It’s a great source for finding a variety of great quality costumes for boys and girls. When Jack was picking out his costume we were both excited by all the super hero, Ninja Turtles, Pirate and Star Wars costumes available. Many costume stores are only open at Halloween, but Costume Super Center is open year round so if your child suddenly wants to pretend to be the latest cartoon character, he can.
Halloween may be once a year but, that doesn’t mean that the costume needs to be. Get all the use out of them you can by making them a part of your child’s every day play. And you will be surprised by the characters that you find hanging out in your house.
