When I travel I’m always on the lookout for something that I can’t find anywhere else. I don’t want to dine at chain restaurants and I don’t want to see or do things that I can do at home. My favorite part of traveling is discovering new places, experiences and products that I love. A few years ago John and I went to Maryland for a wedding. The highlight of our trip was visiting a local distillery, we ended up bringing home a bottle of rum and every time we drank it we were taken back to our trip. These are the types of souvenirs I like to bring back, one of a kind items that you can only find in that place.
Recently I was invited to try Discover Our America subscription box. Discover Our America subscription boxes are a great way to experience the fun of learning about a new place without having to travel. Each box is themed after a state and features items that are made and produced in that state. You get all the fun food travel souvenirs without making the trip. Each box comes with 5-7 items from the state, a colorful, fact-filled brochure about the state and information about the origins of each product. Boxes are shipped each month but you can cancel at anytime.
The box that we received was Georgia. In our box was sweet tea, blackberry patch peach cobbler jam, Georgia Grinders hand crafted peanut butter, Georgia’s Vinegar barbeque Sauce and Kiss My Grits Vidalia onion cheese grits bits. My husband loved the concept of the box and enjoyed trying all of the products and checking out the brochure. It felt like a mini taste of Georgia. The peanut butter was a quick favorite. I was a little wary of the cheese grits but they were surprisingly delicious.
5 Ways to Enjoy Your Discover Our America Box
Have a Theme Night, build your meal around the items provided in the box. Using my box I would make sweet tea, BBQ chicken, and biscuits with jam. You could use the cheese grits and peanut butter on crackers as an appetizer.
As an educational experience. Discover Our America boxes are a great way to introduce kids to geography. Kids can learn about the state capital, places of interest to visit, and history of the state.
Get kids to try new things. My son hates to try anything new but he never passes up the opportunity to open a box up and check out what is inside. These boxes provide a fun opportunity for kids to explore new foods.
Plan a trip or pretend too. Using the state guide in the box look up the places of interest. Talk about where you would go and what you would do in that state.
Develop a recipe. A fun way to really dig into the box and have some fun would be to use the items in the box to make a meal, then have a theme night to celebrate.
What I loved most about Discover Our America is the learning element. It is a great way to teach kids about different states. It is also a fun way to learn about a place before you visit it or may even inspire you to take a trip to that state.
The items in the box brought a little piece of Georgia into our home. We ate some delicious food and learned about the state and for just a moment, had a little vacation even if it was only in our minds.
I was provided with a Discover Our America box, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
