Motherhood is never easy. Whether you’re a working mom or a work-at-home mom or a stay-at-home mom, it’s not easy. And while our lives may look different on the outside, I like to think that we share a lot more experience than we realize. I am in no way a perfect parent, nor do I know any (sorry Dad). The only perfect parents I see, usually are on TV where life can happily be wrapped up in 30 minute increments. But we all know that is not reality, which is why I really enjoyed Fx’s new show Better Things.
Let me set it up for you Sam is a single mom to three girls who is trying to juggle parenthood and her television career, along with finding time for her own relationships. The pilot of Better Things has Sam juggling car pool, a script issue at work that has her questioning her choices and a teenage daughter who is pushing the boundaries. Better Things had me laughing and nodding through out the pilot and waiting to see what happens next week.
3 Moments From Fx’s Better Things Pilot That I’ve Lived
Opening Scene
In the opening scene of the show Sam and her youngest daughter are at the mall and her daughter is having a tantrum about something Sam wouldn’t buy. An elderly woman sitting on the bench with them looks on in disdain. I’ve definitely been in this situation, where I’ve gotten a dirty look or two for how my kids have acted in public. We don’t always have control over how our kids act or how others react to them but we do have control over how we respond and Sam’s response is priceless.
Back to School Shopping Scene
In the pilot Sam takes her oldest daughter back to school shopping and can’t seem to find the graph paper. She refers to back to school shopping as a “pre apocalyptic nightmare” and wonders “does anybody actually work here“. Last week as Jack started school I found myself in an office supply store looking for printer ink and waiting in a line 20 people deep, and I thought “does anybody actually work here”. This scene was me last week.
Bedtime
Bedtime at Sam’s house look a lot like bedtime at my house, she puts her daughter to bed, her daughter has forgotten to brush her teeth and then her daughter asks her to lay down. I think we go through this every night at my house. Some nights there is time for cuddles, other nights I’m so exhausted I fear I might fall asleep if I lay down. I don’t know any mom who hasn’t fought the bedtime battles.
Better Things shows that while we all aren’t Sam, we can all relate to Sam and that some moments in motherhood are common experiences. We share more as moms than we think, the good, the bad and the funny.

I relate to the opening scene for sure. My 3 year old is Mr.Tantrum and I get all kinds of looks when were out shopping. I guess my son is the first kid they have seen throw a fit. Lol. This shows looks amazing, I gotta watch it.

I love the smoke detector clip! LOL! When anything happens here like that, I can pretty much handle it clamly and logically. Add hubby and kiddo to the mix and they freak and cause drama…it’s just their personalities to shout and be loud and of course it sets me off and I start yelling like a maniac. Definitely felt like a scene in our house! 😀 I LOVE this show!
