How can one little person need so many clothes? I remember thinking this after my baby shower. It seemed impossible that he was going to wear all the adorable outfits that we had been given. Fast forward, to when Jackson was born and I had to run out and buy more clothes, because he was swimming in some of the newborn clothes and the ones that did fit he had spit up on. Some days we went through as many baby clothes as we did diapers.
It’s hard to know what your baby will or won’t wear and how many of each one you will need. Every kid is different and for as many outfits as I went through with Jackson I’ve gone through half as many with Grace. Though the second time around I definitely had a good idea of what pieces I needed to build the essential baby wardrobe.
Building the Essential Baby Wardrobe
The Original Bodysuit
The original bodysuit is the is the ultimate baby basic. It goes with just about everything and is the perfect place to start your baby’s wardrobe. Bodysuits can be the start of an easy outfit or perfect for underneath clothes in colder weather. They are also the one wardrobe staple that is always in my diaper bag in the event of a diaper blow-out. Carter’s original bodysuits come in varying size packs, I tend to like to buy them 5 at a time. We go through a lot of these at my house between drool and diaper incidents so I try to have about 5 -8 of these.
Little Character Sets
There is nothing cuter than a little character on your baby’s bottom as they work on their tummy time. I love the Carter’s Little Character Sets not just for their cuteness but also for function. The Little Character sets are made to get your through more than one season; you get a long sleeve original bodysuit for chilly days and a short sleeve one for warmer days. The pants match both of the original bodysuits and are in different styles so it doesn’t look like you brought two of the same outfit. I recommend buying 2-3 of these.
Sleep and Play
Jack lived in Sleep and Play outfits. Being a winter baby we were always home and these cozy little sleepers were perfect. I am especially fond of the ones with the zippers and have been known to buy them in every pattern and every size. When buying newborn clothes these are my go-to because they are great for quick diaper changes and perfect for those weeks when the baby mostly sleeps. As my kids got older they wore them as pajamas. Since babies can’t sleep with blankets, the sleep and play outfits kept them warm all year round. Add a bodysuit underneath in the winter and you are good-to-go. I recommend buying 5-7 of these.
Adorable Outfits
My Mom and I were recently in Carter’s oohing and ahhing over all the perfectly matched outfits and wishing that they had them in our size. Baby fashion is so cute and coordinated because sleep deprived moms do not have the time to ponder if something matches. Carter’s does the matching for you. I usually buy 1-2 when my baby is a newborn because sleep and play outfits are best for that stage. As the baby gets older I buy more outfits. For the fall I love the Little Jacket Sets and the Vest Sets because they come with an original bodysuit, pants and a top layer which is perfect for Fall days that can go from chilly to warm. I recommend buying about 7 of these. If you are really into matching you may want more. If you like to mix up your baby fashion, Carter’s baby clothing mixes and matches well so you can turn a few outfits into lots of combinations.
It’s easy to get carried away with accessories. Little shoes, booties, hats and bows, oh the bows, I have such a hard time stopping myself from buying bows. So much so that Jack says, “Mom, you always say Gracie needs a new bow”. Carter’s has a great line of accessories for girls and boys. I recommend buying at least 2 sets of shoes/booties and about 3 hats depending on the season, for me these items along with socks get lost the easiest. If your baby is eating solids or is teething you will need bibs, buy lots of them, once the baby starts eating you will use about 3 a day and with teething comes drool so you may go through more than 3 a day.
Shopping for baby clothes is fun. Now that Jack is older I miss the cute matching outfits and adorable prints. I’m loving buying Grace all kinds of cute things to wear, my husband might argue that I’m enjoying it a little too much. Carter’s clothing is not only fun, it’s functional. Carter’s has thought of everything that parents need to build the essential baby wardrobe.

By far my favorite place to shop even now. And every time I go in to find something for Connor, I seem to keep buying more items for Kiki. Their stuff is so cute and so durable.
