What to wear in the summer, especially to the beach is always a bit of a conundrum for me. I want to look pulled together, I want to hide all the problem areas, I want to be able to sit in the sand and play with my children without showing the world my but. You get the drift.
Bathing suit season is a nightmare. It doesn’t help that around here it goes from “it’s so cold I’m just going to have another glass of wine and a cupcake” to “Let’s go to the beach” in a matter of days.
The older I get the more I lament that I didn’t appreciate my bikini body when I was in my teens and twenties. Because these days when I look at a bathing suit all I feel is dread. Because even when I’m in decent shape, age and having kids have made bathing suit season less enjoyable.
Which is a shame because I love the beach, I love the pool and I love being able to swim and play with my kids. And I don’t want to be self-conscious while doing it.
A few years ago a friend suggested a swimsuit to me and since then it’s been my go-to suit. I can jump in the pool with Jack and not worry about my swimsuit. I can go paddle boarding in the same suit that I feel confident playing on the beach with my kids in. And the best thing about this bathing suit is that it’s all about the bottoms so you can pick which top best fits your body.

The One Bathing Suit Mom Needs This Summer
The Kata Swim Short from Athleta has been my go-to suit for about 4 years now. What I love about these swim shorts is that they are lined inside, so no need to wear something under them. They don’t hug at all so you don’t have to worry about unflattering muffin tops. They are long enough that you won’t feel self-conscious playing on the beach with your kids, but short enough that you won’t feel like you are wearing pants when you get out of the pool.
These shorts have made bathing suit shopping easy for me, every year I treat myself to a new pair and a new top to match. They run true to size.
Here are some tops I love. I have owned this top and last year I had this one, both surprisingly have a lot of support. I have my eye on this one and this one for this summer. Many of Athleta’s tops run by bra size making it easy to buy.
If you are worried about the length of swim shorts or haven’t tried swim shorts and are looking for something more traditional, here are a few alternatives that have caught my eye. This one is more of a Bermuda short and this one is closer to a traditional bikini bottom.
Having a go-to bathing suit makes shopping for one so much easier. I don’t have to worry about trying on a bunch of swimsuits. I don’t have to make returns or worry about what I’m going to wear to pool parties or to the beach. I can just enjoy summer with my kids the way it’s meant to be.
