This summer we decided to plan a last-minute getaway. We knew we wanted to be away for about 3 days and that we didn’t want to do a ton of driving since our trip was going to be so short. When planning the trip we found ourselves gravitating towards destinations that could easily be reached by taking the Cape May Lewes Ferry.
The Cape May Lewes Ferry saves you travel time when traveling between New Jersey and Delaware (or vice versa) and it’s conveniently located near many great destinations.
6 Great Destinations Near the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal
Destinations Near the Cape May Ferry Terminal
Cape May, NJ
Cape May, NJ is a located just a few minutes from the Cape May Terminal. Once in Cape May you can shop on Washington Ave, visit the beach, take a historical tour or check out one of the many great restaurants. One of my favorite restaurants in the Mad Batter located near the Washington Square Mall. I recommend stopping in for brunch and having a Manmosa (Orange vodka, Allagash white beer, Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice, and champagne). For dinner I love Lucky Bones, located on your way into Cape May, they have lots of delicious fresh seafood, the Cape May Vineyard Local Clams are always a must-have.
Atlantic City, NJ
Located less than an hour from the Cape May Terminal is Atlantic City. Atlantic City offers something for everyone. There are the Tanger Outlets which offer at least a days worth of shopping. The beaches in Atlantic City are free and there are several bars/restaurants on the boardwalk. Kids and those who think they are still kids will love visiting the Steel Pier and the newly opened Wheel, a giant Ferris Wheel offering spectacular views of the coastline. When visiting Atlantic City I suggest stopping in at Little Water Distillery for locally made whiskey and enjoying a cocktail before heading to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants The Iron Room. While at The Iron Room make sure to order the bacon, just trust me on this one.
Sea Isle City, NJ
There are many shore towns within driving distance of the Cape May Ferry Terminal but my favorite is my hometown of Sea Isle City. It’s centrally located so that you can enjoy Ocean City, Wildwood or Cape May and it has some of the best beaches and restaurants at the Jersey Shore. Visiting Sea Isle would not be complete without getting a beer at the Carousel, located off the promenade next door to the Springfield Inn. As for dining, you can’t go wrong with any of the Italian restaurants in town. My personal favorites are Andrea Trattoria and Basilico’s.
Vacation Destinations Near the Lewes Ferry Terminal
Rehoboth Beach, DE
Located a few minutes from the Ferry Terminal in Lewes, DE is Rehoboth Beach. One of my favorite things to do in Rehoboth Beach is to take the shuttle from the ferry to the Tanger Outlets for a day of shopping. There are 3 outlet locations: Surfside, Bayside and Seaside and there is shuttle service between all three making shopping easy. Also, a favorite is Dogfish Head Brewery located nearby in Milton, DE. A few years ago my friends and I took the ferry to over and took a cab to Dogfish Head for the brewery tour and then headed to Rehoboth for lunch at the Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats gastropub.
Ocean City, MD
This summer we took the Cape May Lewes Ferry and met our friends in Ocean City, Maryland. This 3-day vacation getaway was so much fun and when it was time to go home we loved the ease of getting to Ocean City from the ferry. Ocean City is only about an hour from the Lewes Ferry terminal after a fun ride on the ferry we were on vacation. We enjoyed staying at the Princess Royal Hotel which was located on the beach and has an indoor pool. The kids enjoyed the rides at the Jolly Roger and the parents enjoyed dinner at Fish Tales.
Chincoteague, VA
Before we had kids John and I spent a weekend in Chincoteague which I remember as one of the most fun weekends of my life. We took the Cape May Lewes Ferry over on a Friday night, just in time for the rock the boat cruise. We enjoyed live music and dancing while onboard, it was the perfect way to start the weekend. Then we spent 2 days in Chincoteague lounging on the beach and dancing at the Chincoteague Inn Bar and Restaurant. While the Chincoteague Inn is no longer open there are still plenty of things to do in Chincoteague.
My family loves that the Cape May Lewes Ferry allows us to travel to so many great local destinations without spending a lot of time in the car. Some of my favorite memories have been made on trips taken via the ferry. From celebrating my husbands birthday at Dogfish head to family trips to Ocean City, Maryland the Cape May Lewes Ferry has made our adventures so much easier. We are already planning where to travel next summer and we know that a trip on the Cape May Lewes Ferry will be part of it.
