Before kids I watched a lot of TV. John and I would stay up late, just watching one more episode of The Sopranos. My friends and I would buy cheap wine and watch episodes of Sex and the City. I was obsessed with Lost, and tried to find meaning in every episode. When I had Jack I watched all the episodes How I Met Your Mother.
Then life got busy and I didn’t have much time for TV other than Disney Junior and when John came home from work he wanted control of the TV. Add to that, that the most popular shows in the past few years have been a bit on the violent side. I don’t have the stomach for Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead. So I haven’t watched much TV lately.
But in the past year or so I’ve started watching more TV. First it was to avoid election news and give my brain a break from the daily “Breaking News” headlines. Sometimes I just need a little escape. These are my favorites that I’ve binged in the past year.
7 Shows to Binge Watch This Summer
Nurse Jackie
I feel like this show doesn’t get the credit it deserves but everyone I have suggested it to has loved it. Think one part Sopranos (after all Edie Falco stars, and is much more Tony than Carmela in this one) and one part hospital drama. You will miss these characters when it’s over. Available on Netflix.
Pair with vodka and cranberry,or just vodka.
Orange is the New Black
Set in a woman’s prison this show mixes humor, violence and social commentary. So maybe you watched a season and didn’t love it. Or during the second season, you felt like it lost its way. Well I’m telling you to hang in there, season 4 was great and season 5 is the best yet. Read the book first to get a bit of background on the show. Available on Netflix.
Pair with Forty Ounce Rose.
Scandal
I don’t know what took me so long to get into this. The first season wasn’t the most catchy but after that I was hooked. Think political drama full of sex and intrigue that keeps you asking, could this really happen. Season 6 will be starting on Netflix on June 17th.
Pair with a really big glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.
UnReal
If you are a fan of reality TV or of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, you need to be watching UnReal. Created by a former Bachelor Producer UnReal gives you a behind the scenes look at reality shows and will definitely have you questioning how real your favorite reality shows are. Available on Comcast On Demand or on Hulu. Season 3 premieres in 2018 so catch up now.
Pair with Tequila, that’s it just tequila, maybe add some lime.
Bloodline
A family who runs an inn, in the Florida Keys has a lot of secrets and demons. This is one of those rare shows where the characters are not likable but you just have to find out what awful thing they do next. It’s currently on its 3rd and last season on Netflix.
Pair with a Key West Sunset Ale, if you can’t find one a Landshark will do.
House of Cards
Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright keep this political drama which is high on intrigue, backstabbing and scheming from becoming too unbelievable. It definitely keeps you guessing about how much of what goes on, might be happening in real life. Catch up on Netflix, season 5 just started.
Pair with an expensive bourbon, or any liquor you can twirl in a fancy glass while plotting your next move.
Veep
If politics could be this funny the world would be a better place. Veep was once described as the political show that most closely resembled what it is really like in the West Wing. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is better than she’s ever been as Vice President Selina Myer and the supporting cast is perfection. Catch it on HBO or Amazon Prime.
Pair it with a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc, that you tell your friends was expensive but you got it for under $15.
